Matthew is corporate and business law attorney with over 20 years of experience in both private practice and as general counsel at both public and private media and technology companies.  Since late 2018 Matthew has been in private practice, representing executives, entrepreneurs and companies in debt and venture capital financing, corporate governance and employment matters.

From 2003 through 2018 Matthew occupied three general counsel roles.    Matthew served as general counsel at Uproxx Media Group, Inc., the owner of popular website Uproxx.com, from 2014 until 2018. In this role, he successfully guided Uproxx through four years of growth, overseeing licensing, commercial transactions, venture capital financing, debt financing, employment, corporate governance, and, ultimately, the sale of the business to Warner Music Group Inc.

Prior to his time at Uproxx, Matthew served as in-house counsel of Demand Media, Inc. from 2005 through 2013, the last four years of which he was the company’s general counsel.   In 2011, Matthew lead Demand Media’s legal efforts in its successful initial public offering on the New York Stock Exchange.  During Matthew’s tenure, Demand Media operated one of the country’s largest networks of consumer internet sites.

From 2003 to 2005, Matthew was in-house counsel for MySpace, Inc., where he served as the company’s general counsel from his hire date through the company’s acquisition by News Corporation.  MySpace is widely known as having been the first social network to reach scale.

From 1994 through 2003, Matthew was in private practice, primarily with Orrick.  At Orrick, Matthew was an associate in the corporate lending department, where he was responsible for negotiating and documenting secured credit facilities on behalf of banks and commercial lenders.

Matthew holds a J.D. from the University of California, Berkeley School of Law and a B.A. in Sociology, magna cum laude, from Haverford College.
